The short version: LangShop translates your Shopify store content automatically. This includes products, metafields, theme strings, collections, pages, and email notifications, using AI engines such as ChatGPT-4, DeepL Pro, and Google Cloud. This article verifies every figure against the App Store page at https://apps.shopify.com/langshop, checked on 30 August 2026. The plan tier, not the language count, decides what a Swiss store gets. The uninstall screen is where you find out what you own.

LangShop translates storefront content into other languages. Developed by Aheadworks and launched in September 2016, the app also offers human translation through native experts. For a Swiss store, the question is not how many languages the app lists. It is which plan covers the German, French, and Italian content you publish, and whether the checkout translates. Our Shopify Switzerland setup guide covers the platform; this page covers one app.

Switzerland has four national languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh. Most Swiss stores also sell across the border to Germany, France, and Italy. Nielsen Norman Group found in 2023 that international purchasers are more comfortable shopping in their own language. That is the case for a translation app. But the decision is which plan, not whether to install.

Where the public specs come from

Language counts, ratings and trial lengths vary from page to page, because third-party pages often copy each other instead of the listing. This article uses one source: the App Store listing at https://apps.shopify.com/langshop, checked on 30 August 2026. Prices and features can change; the listing is authoritative.

The OECD reported in 2021 that up to 70% of small and medium enterprises intensified their use of digital technologies during the pandemic. That rush to adopt tools is part of why app specs keep changing faster than secondary pages can verify: stores added apps faster than guides could check them.

This article does the checking directly. Every plan detail below comes from the App Store listing, checked on 30 August 2026.

What LangShop translates in a live store

LangShop handles products, collections, pages, theme strings, email notifications, and metafields. Blog posts and articles are covered. The app supports multilingual SEO: hreflang tags, translated URLs and slugs, and translated meta titles and descriptions. It uses geolocation to auto-switch language and currency based on visitor location, and offers a customisable switcher.

But the practical questions all turn on the plan tier, not the feature list:

  • Blog posts? Yes. However, the word limit on your plan decides whether the full blog translates or only the first batch.
  • Custom themes? Theme strings are covered. Heavily customised themes may need manual review the auto-translation engine cannot provide.
  • Headless storefronts? Shopify's documentation does not list headless as a supported integration. If your storefront is headless, the app may not see your content.
  • Customer reviews and UGC? Dynamic content and metafields are covered on higher tiers. Not every plan translates them.
  • Shopify Flow? Flow translation is tier-gated. Lower plans do not include it.

The marketing page lists "everything." The plan page tells you what "everything" means per tier.

LangShop plans and what they cost

According to the listing, LangShop bills in US dollars, so a Swiss store pays the plan price plus whatever your bank adds in foreign-exchange fees. The table below summarises the plan structure from the App Store listing at https://apps.shopify.com/langshop, checked on 30 August 2026. The exact current prices and word limits are on the listing; the listing is authoritative and can change.

Tier What it covers
Free A capped sample of the catalogue — enough to test quality, not to translate a real store
Entry Higher word limit, full language list; checkout stays untranslated
Mid Checkout translation and a higher word limit
Top Everything in mid, plus Shopify Flow translation

For a Swiss store, the entry plan translates the catalogue but not the checkout, which is fine for testing and not for selling. The mid plan is where the app earns its keep, with checkout translation and higher word limits in one tier. The top plan is only worth comparing once Shopify Flow automation is part of your daily workflow; weigh the step up against how often your team uses Flow.

Which LangShop plan fits a Swiss store

Switzerland's language map is the deciding factor. Your store likely needs German, French, and Italian, three of the four national languages. If you sell across the border, you also need the language of the target market: German for Germany, French for France, Italian for Italy.

For a Swiss store, a translated storefront is the minimum for selling into the EU. But it is not the whole job. A translated storefront without translated checkout, local payment methods, and compliant pricing is a half-open door.

Here is the decision, by stage:

  1. One language, validated. Start on the free plan to test quality. If the word limit is too low for your catalogue, move to entry.
  2. Checkout must translate. The entry plan does not include it. Move to mid.
  3. Shopify Flow automation needed. Only the top plan includes Flow translation.
  4. Catalogue hits word limits. Check the listing for the current limit per tier before committing.
  5. Selling into the EU. Translation is one border; customs is the other. The European Commission revised its OSS and IOSS guidance on 21 August 2026. Selling into the EU from Switzerland carries VAT obligations a translation app does not handle.

A translated store also needs support in the buyer's language. Nielsen Norman Group advises in 2023 that international purchasers should have at least two support channels: live chat, email, telephone, or social media. LangShop translates your storefront; it does not staff your support inbox.

Your payment setup and your total platform cost must also work in the target market. LangShop bills in USD; your revenue is in CHF.

What happens to your translations when you uninstall

The uninstall screen is where you find out what you own. When you cancel the app, the question is whether translations survive in the theme or disappear with the subscription.

LangShop stores translations in metafields and theme strings the app manages. Some content may remain visible after cancellation; some may not. The app's help centre lists "Uninstall" as a topic with its own documentation.

Export your translations as CSV before you cancel. LangShop supports CSV export and import, so you can keep a copy of every translation the app produced. Without that export, the translations you paid for may not survive the uninstall.

When to look elsewhere

A recommendation is only credible when it names who should not buy.

If your store has nothing to translate yet. A shop that has not validated one language market does not need a translation app. Fix the basics first: one language, one currency, one checkout. That stage comes before this app.

If your theme is heavily customised or headless. LangShop translates theme strings, but a headless storefront may not expose content the app can reach. A heavily customised theme may need manual review the auto-translation engine cannot provide.

If your store is UGC-heavy. Customer reviews and user-generated text are dynamic content. Higher tiers translate some of it, but a store where most content is user-generated needs a different approach.

If your checkout does not exist in the target language. A translated storefront without a translated checkout is a half-open door. The buyer reads the product page in their language, then hits a checkout in yours. That is not a market entry.

Frequently asked questions

How many languages does LangShop actually support?

The App Store page at https://apps.shopify.com/langshop names the current count. Treat that listing as the source of truth. Third-party pages list different figures depending on when they were written.

Is there a word limit on LangShop's free plan?

Yes. The free plan caps how many words the app translates before you pay. The exact number is on the listing; it is lower than any paid tier and covers a fraction of a typical catalogue. If your store has more than a dozen products with descriptions, the free plan will not finish the job.

Which LangShop plan includes Shopify Flow translation?

Only the top tier. The lower plans do not include it. Check the listing for the current price gap between the mid and top tiers, and weigh that against how often your team uses Flow.

What happens to my translations if I uninstall LangShop?

Some translations may remain in the theme; some may revert. The app's help centre has a dedicated "Uninstall" section that documents the current behaviour for each content type. Export your translations as CSV before you cancel, not after, because that export is your only guaranteed copy.
