The short version: Orbe Geolocation's one job on a Swiss store is at the customs border: move EU and overseas visitors to the storefront you want them to see, and leave Swiss visitors alone. This walkthrough configures Orbe for Switzerland's three language regions. It keeps CHF and MWST/TVA stable at the checkout and shows you how to test the redirects before they reach a single customer. On the App Store listing, checked on 30 August 2026, the free tier covers up to roughly 300 redirections. The Advanced plan is $29 a month, and the Plus plan is $59 a month. Prices can change; the listing is authoritative. You also need to settle the FADP/DSG question before the app goes live.

Swiss e-commerce reached CHF 15.8 billion in 2025, a 6% increase, according to Swiss Post. Online sales accounted for 12.5% of total Swiss retail that year. More volume means more cross-border traffic hitting your storefront, and more reasons to sort it correctly.

This guide assumes you already have a store. If you do not, start with our Shopify Switzerland: set up your store walkthrough. Here we cover what happens when visitors from different countries arrive at the same domain.

Forty-one per cent of Swiss merchants reported strong or moderate impact from Asian platforms like Temu in 2025, the same Swiss Post report found. The border is not abstract. A German shopper who lands on your .ch domain and sees CHF prices may leave before they read a word.

The job Orbe has at the Swiss border

Geolocation moves visitors between storefronts. Nothing else. Orbe detects a visitor's location by IP address and browser language, then recommends the right country, language, and currency view. That is the full scope of what the app does.

For a Swiss store, the border is the customs border. A visitor from Lyon should see your French storefront with EUR prices. A visitor from Zürich should see CHF, their preferred language, and no popup. The configuration succeeds when Swiss customers never notice the app exists.

Shopify's own documentation states that Orbe integrates with Shopify Markets, Global-e, and expansion stores as the localisation backend. The app saves user preferences and automatically redirects on future visits. It also preserves UTM parameters and marketing attribution through redirects, so your campaign tracking survives the switch.

The mistake is treating Orbe as a tour guide. It is a customs officer. It checks passports at the border and lets residents through without a word.

When not to install: if you sell only within Switzerland, in one language, with one currency, you do not need Orbe. Your theme's built-in language switcher handles the rest. The app earns its cost only when you serve at least two markets separated by the customs border.

What to set in Shopify before you install Orbe

Orbe reads markets, languages, and currency from the Shopify admin. If those are wrong, the app sorts visitors into the wrong storefronts. Set the foundation first.

Here is the pre-installation checklist:

  1. Enable your markets in Shopify admin. Create a Switzerland market and at least one EU market, depending on where you sell.
  2. Add your languages. German, French, and Italian for the Swiss market, plus matching languages for your EU markets.
  3. Set CHF as the home currency. Each market gets its own currency: CHF for Switzerland, EUR for the EU.
  4. Configure Shopify Payments. Ensure your gateway is active for each market. See our Shopify Payments in Switzerland guide for the details.
  5. Add TWINT to your Swiss checkout. TWINT was used for 26% of payments in Swiss e-commerce in 2025, Swiss Post reports. Do not let a redirect break it. Our TWINT at a Shopify checkout walkthrough covers the setup.
  6. Publish your themes. Each market needs a published theme with the right language and currency selectors.

None of these steps involve Orbe. They are Shopify admin settings. Orbe reads them and acts on them.

Mapping the three Swiss languages inside Orbe

Switzerland has three main language regions. A visitor from Genève should see French. From Ticino, Italian. From Zürich, German.

Orbe cannot tell a German-speaking from a French-speaking Swiss visitor by IP alone. Both resolve to Swiss IPs. Browser-language detection helps here. The Nielsen Norman Group recommends defaulting to the language version that matches users' browser settings to save an extra step, in a 2022 article on language switchers. Orbe uses browser language as a fallback signal.

Set the Swiss IP language rules in Orbe: map browser language "fr" to the French storefront, "it" to Italian, and "de" or "de-CH" to German. If the browser language is none of those, default to German. German is the largest language region in Switzerland.

The same NNGroup article recommends displaying the name of an available language in that language itself. Your selector should read "Deutsch", "Français", and "Italiano", not "German", "French", and "Italian". This applies to the Shopify theme's language selector. Orbe's selectors are customised from the Shopify Theme Editor, with dynamic variables and custom CSS on paid plans.

Swiss German is a spoken dialect, not a written one. Do not create a "Swiss German" storefront. Your German content should be in Standard German, the written language all Swiss German speakers read.

Redirect rules: move the EU visitor, never the Swiss one

This is where the customs-border thesis becomes operational. Every redirect rule in Orbe should target an EU or overseas visitor. No rule should touch a Swiss IP.

The Baymard Institute advises using IP geotargeting for country selection but ensuring it is easy to change. Never display the selector in an overlay dialog on desktop, in its e-commerce UX best practices. Orbe's popup respects this if you configure it correctly. Set the first-visit popup to show only when the visitor is in the incorrect experience, not always. The default is "show always", which disturbs every visitor including Swiss ones.

Configure these redirect rules:

  • German IP to German EU storefront (EUR).
  • French IP to French EU storefront (EUR).
  • Italian IP to Italian EU storefront (EUR).
  • All other non-CH IPs to your default EU or international storefront.
  • Swiss IPs: no redirect, no popup.

Preference duration is configurable. After closing the popup, the default is 7 days, with a minimum of 1. After selecting a country or language, the default is 60 days. You can also set it to session-only. For a Swiss store, the 60-day default is reasonable. Returning EU visitors should not see the popup on every visit.

Orbe preserves UTM parameters through redirects. Your campaign tracking stays intact when a German ad sends a visitor to your .ch domain and Orbe moves them to the .de storefront.

CHF, MWST and Shopify Payments: the settings Orbe never touches

Orbe does not set tax rates. It does not configure currency display. It does not manage your payment gateway. These are Shopify admin settings, and the app never touches them.

The Federal Tax Administration (ESTV/AFC) sets MWST/TVA rates and the registration thresholds. For general businesses, mandatory VAT registration applies at CHF 100,000 of turnover from taxable supplies, according to the ESTV. For non-profit sports or cultural clubs, the threshold rises to CHF 250,000. The same CHF 250,000 applies to non-profit institutions. For public law entities, the threshold is CHF 100,000 of turnover from taxable supplies to non-public entities. These figures come from the tax authority, not from Shopify or Orbe.

Your Shopify admin handles MWST display at the checkout. Orbe's redirect sends a visitor to the right market. The market's tax settings determine what the visitor sees. If your Swiss market shows CHF prices with MWST included, that display is stable regardless of where the visitor came from.

Shopify Payments processes the transaction. The market determines the currency. TWINT must remain available at the Swiss checkout. A redirect that sends a Swiss visitor to an EU storefront would break TWINT. That is why Swiss IPs are excluded from every redirect rule.

Why you do not redirect your own market

No tool can reliably tell a German-speaking from a French-speaking Swiss visitor. Both resolve to Swiss IPs. Both may share the same browser language if the visitor lives in a bilingual canton. Redirecting within Switzerland is guessing.

A language switcher, not a redirect, serves the domestic divide. The Nielsen Norman Group recommends placing language switchers in the top corners on desktop sites. On mobile, place them above the fold or in the navigation menu, in its 2022 language switcher guide. Your Shopify theme's built-in selector does this. Orbe does not need to.

The separate .ch store question is simpler than it looks. If you run one Shopify store with Shopify Markets, Orbe sorts visitors between markets on the same domain. If you run separate stores for Switzerland and the EU, Orbe can redirect across domains. Both setups work. The single-store approach is easier to maintain and is what most Swiss merchants start with.

Sixty-seven per cent of Swiss e-commerce merchants expect revenue growth in 2026, the same Swiss Post report found. Growth comes from serving the market you have, not from over-engineering the one you do not.

Orbe vs the built-in country selector: what the table shows

Three realistic options exist for sorting visitors on a Swiss store. The table below compares them by what matters at the customs border, not by feature counts.

Option Monthly price (check date) Redirects EU visitors Detects Swiss language region Disturbs the Swiss visitor (our judgment) Fits the customs-border thesis
Orbe Geolocation Free up to ~300 redirects; $29 Advanced; $59 Plus (App Store, 30 Aug 2026) Yes, by IP and browser language Partially, via browser language No, if Swiss IPs are excluded Yes, when configured as a border filter
Shopify built-in country selector Included in your Shopify plan No, visitor must self-select No, visitor must self-select No No, it is a signpost not a customs officer
Manual language switcher, no app Free No No, visitor must self-select No No, it does nothing at the border

The built-in country selector is a signpost. It lets visitors choose. Orbe is the customs officer. It sorts them before they have to ask. The manual switcher is a signpost with no map.

Shopify's own pricing page, checked on 30 August 2026, lists plan prices that do not include app costs. Orbe's prices are separate. See our What does Shopify cost in Switzerland? guide for the full bill.

Launch checks: testing with Swiss IPs, then the FADP question

Before Orbe reaches a single customer, test it. Use a VPN or a phone on mobile data to simulate visitors from three locations.

Our suggested pre-launch test sequence:

  1. Swiss IP (Zürich or Genève): no popup, no redirect, CHF and the right language.
  2. German IP (Munich or Berlin): redirect to the German EU storefront, EUR prices.
  3. French IP (Lyon or Paris): redirect to the French EU storefront, EUR prices.
  4. Check that TWINT still appears at the Swiss checkout after the redirect rules are active.
  5. Check that MWST displays correctly on the Swiss storefront.
  6. Check that UTM parameters survive the redirect by appending a test parameter to the URL.

Then settle the FADP question. The Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP/DSG) governs how Swiss businesses process personal data. Orbe processes IP addresses and browser language to determine a visitor's country. IP addresses are personal data under the FADP. Your privacy policy should mention that geolocation is used to direct visitors to the right storefront. This is not professional legal advice. It is the check every Swiss store must settle before publishing.

Do not do these things in the first hour:

  • Do not set campaign link parameters before the switcher works.
  • Do not block manual override. A visitor who wants to switch language must be able to.
  • Do not auto-reroute checkout domains. The checkout must stay on the market the visitor is shopping in.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set up Orbe Geolocation for a Swiss store step by step?

Install Orbe from the App Store listing, enable the App Embed in your theme, then configure your markets and languages in the Shopify admin first. Orbe reads those settings. Set redirect rules for EU IPs only, exclude Swiss IPs from every rule, and test with a VPN before going live. The setup takes under 10 minutes if your markets are already configured.

Does Orbe work with Shopify Payments in Switzerland?

Yes. Orbe redirects visitors between markets, but the payment gateway is a Shopify admin setting the app never touches. As long as your Swiss market has Shopify Payments configured with CHF and TWINT enabled, redirects will not break the checkout. The redirect only changes which storefront a visitor sees, not which gateway processes their payment.

Can Orbe redirect Swiss customers to a separate .ch store or domain?

Yes, if you run separate Shopify stores for Switzerland and the EU. Orbe can redirect across domains in that setup. If you use Shopify Markets on a single store, Orbe sorts visitors between markets on the same domain instead. Most Swiss merchants start with the single-store approach because maintaining two stores doubles the admin work for inventory, content, and MWST reporting.

Is Orbe compliant with Swiss data protection law (FADP)?

Orbe processes IP addresses and browser language, both of which qualify as personal data under the FADP/DSG. Your privacy policy should state that geolocation is used to direct visitors to the correct storefront. This is not professional legal advice. Consult a Swiss data protection lawyer if you are unsure whether your specific setup requires a data processing agreement with Orbe's developer. This is particularly important if you operate under a cantonal data protection regime in addition to the federal law.
