Shopify, for Switzerland

Worldline and Shopify: who the incumbent option fits

Worldline's Shopify plugin fits merchants who already hold a Worldline merchant account. No contract means Shopify Payments is the cheaper and faster route.

A clipboard with blank paper and a card sits beside a tagged cardboard box and a red envelope on a dark surface.

The short version: Worldline's Shopify integration exists for merchants who already hold a Worldline merchant account, the acquiring arrangement most Swiss banks set up for you. If you hold one, installing the plugin is a formality. If you do not, the incumbent option is the wrong first choice: Shopify Payments or Stripe will be cheaper and faster to activate. Worldline does not publish transaction fees, so what this route costs your store depends entirely on your contract. The plugin lists no monthly fee on the Shopify App Store, checked on 26 August 2026. equensWorldline NV, part of Worldline, ranks as the fourth-largest payments player worldwide as of 2026. For Swiss stores, the plugin supports cards, TWINT, and PostFinance Card where its documentation lists them.

Most Shopify payment guides assume you are choosing your acquiring route fresh. Swiss merchants often are not. Your bank handed you a Worldline merchant account years ago, and the question is whether to connect it to Shopify or start over.

This guide treats the contract as a gate. If you already hold a Worldline merchant account, the install is straightforward and we walk it through below. If you do not, Shopify Payments in Switzerland is the cheaper, faster route, and the comparison table explains why.

Heads up: this guide uses Shopify affiliate links. Sign up through one and we are paid a commission, and you pay exactly the same as you would otherwise.

Shopify plans, pricing and features change; always verify the current details on shopify.com before deciding.

For the broader store setup, our Shopify Switzerland: set up your store guide covers the full checklist.

What 'the incumbent option' means for your checkout

Worldline is the Swiss incumbent. The reason is acquisition: Worldline absorbed SIX Payment Services, the former Swiss national payment infrastructure, and with it the acquiring relationships that Swiss banks default to. When your bank set up card acceptance for you, Worldline is probably what you got.

equensWorldline NV, a subsidiary of equensWorldline SE and part of Worldline, describes itself as the European leader in payments and the fourth-largest player worldwide, as of 2026. It holds a licence from DNB/AFM for regulated settlement services and is supervised as critical infrastructure by national and European oversight authorities.

That scale is the point. Worldline is not a startup you evaluate against alternatives. It is the plumbing your bank already connected.

The Shopify integration serves merchants who live inside that plumbing. If you do not, what Shopify is and whether it works in Switzerland answers the more basic question first.

The gate is simple. Are you already Worldline? If yes, read on. If no, skip to the comparison table and pick a route that does not require a contract you do not hold.

The contract gate: check what you already hold

Step zero is not the Shopify admin. It is your filing cabinet.

Find your Worldline merchant account before you touch a plugin. Look for the contract itself, the merchant ID, or the recurring acquiring line on your bank statement. Swiss banks rarely label it "Worldline." It may appear under your bank's brand with Worldline as the processor behind it.

There is no self-serve signup inside the Shopify admin. The plugin assumes you already have a Worldline platform account with API credentials. If you cannot find a contract, you do not have one, and applying for a new Worldline merchant account is a process measured in weeks.

Worldline publishes no standard minimum term or notice period. Those details live in your individual contract, which is why you need the document before you can judge the route.

Our suggested contract-check checklist:

  • Merchant ID (usually 8 to 15 digits).
  • API key and secret (from your Worldline back office).
  • Contract end date and notice period.
  • Acquiring fee schedule (the rate card your bank negotiated).
  • Confirmation of test and live environment access.

If you can tick all five, the plugin install is a formality. If you are missing the first two, you are not ready to install anything.

Install and connect the Worldline app in your admin

The plugin is listed on the Shopify App Store as "Worldline Online Payments." The listing shows no monthly app fee, checked on 26 August 2026. Transaction fees are not on the listing. They come from your contract, not from Shopify.

Installation follows the standard Shopify payment-provider path:

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings, then Payments.
  2. Search for "Worldline Online Payments" in the provider list.
  3. Click Activate, then Connect.
  4. Enter your Worldline API key and secret from your platform account.
  5. Set the webhook URL the plugin displays in your Worldline back office.
  6. Assign the payment method in Shopify's payment list so it appears at checkout.
  7. Switch from test to live once a sandbox transaction clears.

The plugin uses the Hosted Checkout Page method. Your customer is redirected to a Worldline-hosted page to enter card details, then returned to your store. This keeps you under PCI SAQ A compliance, the lightest self-assessment tier.

One common stall: the field names in Worldline's setup guide do not always match what the Shopify app shows. "API key" in the docs may appear as "PSPID" in your Worldline back office. "Secret" may be labelled "API secret" or "SHA passphrase." If a field rejects your input, check the Worldline back office for the exact label before contacting support.

The plugin is available as a standard all-in-one app and as individual payment-method apps for specific instruments. If you only need cards, the standard app is enough. If you want TWINT as a separate button, an individual TWINT app exists for that purpose.

Switch on the payment methods your customers expect

The plugin documentation lists VISA, Mastercard, American Express, TWINT, and PostFinance Card as supported methods. Which ones appear at your checkout depends on your contract. Worldline will not activate a method your merchant account is not approved for.

TWINT matters more than any other method for a Swiss store. Our TWINT at a Shopify checkout: what is verified guide covers the verification details. If TWINT does not appear after you install the Worldline plugin, your contract may not include it. Ask your account manager before you troubleshoot the app.

For EU customers, a Swiss store selling across the border is an export sale. The One Stop Shop (OSS) extended from the mini One Stop Shop (MOSS) on 1 July 2021. It lets you register for VAT in one EU member state and report cross-border B2C sales. As of 2026, OSS returns are filed quarterly in the non-Union and Union schemes. They are filed monthly in the import scheme, which covers goods in consignments not exceeding EUR 150.

Eurostat data from 2024 shows 17.99% of EU enterprises conducted e-sales using only websites or apps. 85.65% of enterprises with web sales used their own websites, while 45% also used a marketplace. The share of EU enterprises with e-sales rose from 18.93% in 2014 to 23.59% in 2024, generating 19.49% of total turnover from e-sales. Those figures describe the EU market you are selling into, not Switzerland.

Your MWST obligations on those cross-border sales are separate from your payment route. Our how to charge MWST on your Shopify store guide covers that.

For subscriptions, the plugin supports recurring payments with a card-on-file caveat. The customer's card is tokenised at the first checkout, and subsequent charges use that token. If the card expires or the token is invalidated, the subscription fails silently until someone notices.

How much Worldline charges your store

Worldline does not publish a rate card. The App Store listing shows no monthly fee for the plugin, checked on 26 August 2026, but transaction fees are set per contract. What you pay per sale is a number your bank negotiated with Worldline, and it is not the number Shopify's pricing page shows.

For comparison, Shopify's Swiss pricing page, checked on 26 August 2026, lists a standard online card sale on the Basic plan at 2.95% plus CHF 0.30. That rate is public, flat, and applies the moment you activate Shopify Payments. Worldline's rate is neither public nor flat. It may be lower or higher depending on your volume and your bank's markup.

Three questions for your Worldline account manager:

  1. What is the per-transaction rate for domestic Swiss cards?
  2. What is the rate for EU-issued cards?
  3. Is there a monthly minimum or a volume commitment?

If the answers are worse than Shopify Payments' published rates, and you have no contractual reason to stay, the incumbent route is costing you money. Our Shopify Preise: what a Swiss shop really pays guide breaks down the full cost stack.

Worldline vs Shopify Payments vs Stripe: three acquiring routes

Three routes can put a card form on your Swiss Shopify checkout. Each starts from a different point.

Worldline (contract route) Shopify Payments (native) Stripe (independent)
Starting requirement Existing Worldline merchant account Shopify store, no separate contract Stripe account (self-serve)
Setup effort Moderate: contract, credentials, plugin Low: activate in admin Low: create account, connect
Published fees No, set per contract Yes, on Shopify's pricing page Yes, on Stripe's pricing page
Swiss payment methods Cards, TWINT, PostFinance Card (per plugin docs) Cards, TWINT Cards, TWINT
Who the route rewards Merchants already in Worldline's acquiring world New stores wanting speed and transparency Stores needing control outside Shopify's native stack

Our take: If you already hold a Worldline merchant account through your Swiss bank, connecting the plugin is the path of least resistance. You keep your existing acquiring and reconciliation. Our call is that every other merchant should start with Shopify Payments. The published rate and zero-contract activation remove the two unknowns Worldline forces you to negotiate. Stripe is the fallback when you need a route Shopify Payments will not serve, not a default.

Go live, then fix the usual failure points

Before you switch to live, run a sandbox transaction. The plugin works with both test and live environments, and the test mode uses the same Hosted Checkout Page your customers will see. Place a test order, confirm the payment status returns as "Paid" (statusCode=9 in Worldline's system), and check that the order appears in Shopify's admin.

Then switch the app to live. Take one real payment with your own card. If it clears, the integration is working.

Three stalls are common.

Credential mismatch. The API key or secret is wrong, expired, or from the wrong environment. Re-copy both from your Worldline back office and paste without trailing spaces.

Activation not completing. You installed the app and entered credentials, but the payment method does not appear in Shopify's payment list. Go back to Settings, then Payments, and confirm Worldline is listed as active, not just installed.

TWINT not appearing. Your contract may not include TWINT, or the individual TWINT app may need a separate activation. Check with your account manager before assuming the plugin is broken.

For 3-D Secure, the plugin enforces Strong Customer Authentication as required by Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2018/389. The European Banking Authority confirms that SCA is obligatory and that exemptions based on transaction risk analysis must follow specific criteria. The Hosted Checkout Page handles this. You do not configure it in Shopify.

Refunds, captures, and cancellations can be performed directly from the Shopify back office. You do not need to log into your Worldline dashboard to process a return.

Frequently asked questions

What are Worldline's transaction fees and monthly costs for Shopify merchants?

Worldline does not publish a rate card. Your per-transaction fee is set in your individual merchant contract, negotiated between your bank and Worldline. The Shopify App Store listing shows no monthly plugin fee, checked on 26 August 2026, but the percentage you pay per sale is not on any public page. You must ask your account manager for the exact rate.

How long does it take to set up Worldline on Shopify?

If you already hold a Worldline merchant account with API credentials, the plugin install takes 30 to 60 minutes. If you need to apply for a new Worldline merchant account, expect weeks. The process involves your bank, underwriting, and contract negotiation before any plugin is installed.

Does Worldline on Shopify support recurring payments or subscriptions?

Yes, with a caveat. The plugin tokenises the customer's card at first checkout and charges the token for subsequent billing cycles. If the card expires or the token is invalidated by the issuing bank, the subscription charge fails silently until you or the customer notices. Shopify's own subscription apps work with this tokenisation, but you should test a renewal cycle in the sandbox before going live.

Can I use Worldline to sell to EU customers from a Swiss store?

Yes. A Swiss store selling to EU consumers is making cross-border B2C sales. The One Stop Shop, in place since 1 July 2021, lets you report EU VAT in one member state. The non-Union scheme requires quarterly returns. Your selling into the EU from a Swiss Shopify store obligations are separate from your payment route.

Is there a minimum contract term for Worldline on Shopify?

Worldline publishes no standard minimum term. The commitment, notice period, and cancellation terms are all in your individual merchant agreement. If your bank set up the account, ask the bank directly, because they hold the original contract and may have negotiated terms that differ from Worldline's defaults.

How does Worldline compare with Shopify Payments?

The core difference is transparency. Shopify Payments publishes its rates on its Swiss pricing page, checked on 26 August 2026, and requires no separate contract. Worldline's fees are contractual, not public, and the route only makes sense if you already hold the acquiring relationship. For a new store with no existing contract, Shopify Payments is cheaper to evaluate and faster to activate.
