Zendrop on Shopify: when not to install

Don't install Zendrop on Shopify if you already have a supplier, or if you cannot verify per-order costs. Swiss stores sit outside the EU OSS system.

The short version: Do not install Zendrop if you already have a supplier, or if you cannot verify the real per-order costs before committing. Also, avoid it if you are not prepared to grant a third party theme access and later audit what it changed. On the Shopify App Store listing, checked on 2 September 2026, the free plan allows no linked products. Paid tiers price by linked-product count: Beginner USD 29 for 1 to 20, Pro USD 49 for 21 to 100, Plus USD 79 for 101 or more — identical feature lists otherwise. The listing states that external charges may be billed separately from your Shopify invoice, and publishes no per-order product or shipping cost. Switzerland sits outside the EU VAT/OSS system, so EU dropshipping advice does not transfer directly, and USD billing lands against your CHF revenue.

Most dropshipping advice assumes you sell inside the EU single market or price in US dollars to a US audience. Switzerland fits neither frame. The customs border changes what you owe on an inbound parcel. It also affects what your customer can return and whether a USD subscription makes sense against CHF revenue. If you are still setting up, our guide to Shopify Switzerland: set up your store covers the platform basics first.

What Zendrop is, and what it asks you to accept

Zendrop is a dropshipping and fulfilment app for Shopify. It provides a supplier catalog, product import, order routing to suppliers, and tracking sync. That is what it does. The harder question is what it asks you to accept.

Installing any Shopify app grants it permissions over your store data. Zendrop needs access to products, orders, customer details, and theme files. That access is the price of the convenience, and it does not end when you stop paying.

The App Store listing, checked on 2 September 2026, shows three paid tiers with identical feature lists. The only difference is how many products you can link: 1 to 20, 21 to 100, or 101 and above. The free plan allows no linked products, so you cannot test a real order flow without paying. The listing also states that "external charges may be billed by Zendrop separately from your Shopify invoice."

That sentence is the one most merchants scroll past. It means the subscription is not the total cost.

You already have a supplier: why another layer rarely helps

If you already source products from a supplier, Zendrop is a duplicate, not an upgrade. Your existing agreement covers sourcing, pricing, and shipping. Adding Zendrop inserts a third party between you and that supplier, and that party sits on top of your product cost.

The case for installing only works when you have no supplier and need one fast. If you have one, the automation Zendrop sells is something you either already have. It is also something you can build with tools that do not charge a subscription on top of your product costs.

This is where EU-focused advice misleads Swiss sellers. The European Commission's One Stop Shop, introduced in 2021, replaced national thresholds for intra-EU distance sales with a single EU-wide threshold of EUR 10,000. Switzerland is not part of that system, and import tax treatment for parcels crossing into Switzerland differs from the intra-EU rules. Confirm your own MWST position with the Federal Tax Administration (ESTV/AFC) or your tax adviser before you set prices.

Merchant guides written for other markets do not transfer. Shopify's own UK tax documentation, for instance, puts UK registration at GBP 90,000 of taxable sales and UK VAT on orders up to GBP 135 for overseas sellers. The OECD noted in 2016 that about 165 countries operate a VAT or GST, each with its own thresholds. A number from any one system is not a Swiss number.

For the platform cost before evaluating apps, our guide on what Shopify costs in Switzerland breaks down the monthly bill in francs.

The cost line Zendrop's pricing page leaves blank

The subscription is the visible cost. The per-order product and shipping charge is the invisible one.

On the App Store listing, checked on 2 September 2026, the free plan allows no linked products. Beginner costs USD 29 a month for 1 to 20 linked products. Pro costs USD 49 for 21 to 100, and Plus costs USD 79 for 101 or more. The feature lists across all three tiers are identical.

What the listing does not publish is the per-order product and shipping cost. That figure decides whether your store survives. The listing is also silent on delivery times, what happens when you exceed your tier's product cap, the refund policy, and which languages support covers. Each is a question for the 24/7 chat before you install, not after.

The subscription arithmetic per order is small at scale and is not the risk. On Plus at USD 79, 500 orders a month amortise to about USD 0.16 per order; 50 orders on Beginner amortise to about USD 0.58. The unknown per-order markup is what can sink a thin margin, and the listing gives you no way to see it before paying. An editorial rule of thumb for a CHF 60 product: if your gross margin before the app layer is below roughly 30 percent (about CHF 18 here), an unverified per-order cost is a bet, not a plan. Get the number from the chat first — or skip the install.

Theme access: what the install permission really grants

Installing is the only way to test Zendrop. That is the core problem. You cannot evaluate the app without granting it access to your live store, your customer data, and your theme files. The vendor's own integration page describes the connection as a one-click install — convenience and permission surface arrive together.

One review on the App Store listing, dated 8 August 2026, reports the app publishing its demo theme over a live store. We cite the review as reported by the listing, not as something we tested ourselves. The review describes a risk that theme access makes structurally possible.

Cart abandonment already averages 70.22%, per Baymard, calculated across 50 separate studies. Any change to your checkout or theme that adds friction pushes that number the wrong way. A third party that can write to your theme files can introduce that friction without your knowledge.

Use a spare Shopify store on a development plan to test. For context on what your checkout should look like, our guide on TWINT at a Shopify checkout covers the payment side.

Uninstalling is not the same as undoing

Removing an app from Shopify takes one click. Undoing what the app changed takes longer.

Any installed Shopify app can leave app blocks in theme sections, snippets in product templates, and data in your store's metafields. Clicking "Remove app" does not automatically reverse those changes. A careful uninstall means checking theme files for residual blocks, reviewing product templates for orphaned sections, and deciding whether customer data the app collected should be deleted.

The listing does not document what Zendrop retains after uninstall or how to request data deletion. That is another question for the chat before you install. The exit cost matters because it is the one you pay if the app does not work for you.

The conditions that would make Zendrop worth it

The positive case for Zendrop has four conditions, and all four must hold.

First, you have no existing supplier. If you already source products directly, Zendrop is a layer you do not need.

Second, your order volume is high enough that the subscription cost per order is negligible. The per-order subscription arithmetic above does that job: at 500 orders on Plus, USD 0.16 per order is noise. At 50 orders on Beginner, USD 0.58 is manageable too. The per-order markup is the real cost, and it does not shrink with volume unless Zendrop offers discounts, which the listing does not state.

Third, you need branded packaging or private labelling. The App Store listing mentions custom packaging and print-on-demand. The vendor's integration page goes further: its Private Agent Program ties advanced customisation, custom packaging and private labeling to eligible high-volume sellers. If branding does not matter to your product, that feature is not worth paying for.

Fourth, you have verified the per-order product and shipping costs before installing. The listing does not publish them. The 24/7 chat is where you ask.

US e-commerce hit US$340.2 billion in Q2 2026, 17.1% of US retail, per the Census Bureau, and Statista projects worldwide eCommerce revenue of US$3.86 trillion for 2026. Large markets do not mean your specific product at your specific margin will work with a dropshipping markup.

For whether Shopify itself is the right platform, our guide on what Shopify is and whether it works in Switzerland covers that question.

A decision checklist before you click Add app

Run through these before you install. If you answer "no" to any of the first three, do not install.

  1. Do you have no existing supplier agreement that already covers sourcing and shipping?
  2. Can you verify the per-order product and shipping cost from Zendrop's chat before installing?
  3. Is your gross margin on the product comfortably above the unverified cost layer?
  4. Are you prepared to audit your theme files after uninstalling?
  5. Do you have a spare or development store to test the install before going live?
  6. Have you confirmed whether Zendrop's delivery times meet your customer's expectations?
  7. Have you checked how USD billing affects your CHF pricing after currency conversion?

If you reach "yes" on all seven, Zendrop may be worth installing. You can also review Shopify Payments in Switzerland to understand your checkout options before adding any third-party app.

Frequently asked questions

When should I not install Zendrop on my Shopify store?

Skip the install if you already have a supplier, or if your margin cannot absorb an unverified per-order cost. Also skip it if you cannot get that cost from Zendrop's chat before installing. Installing also commits you to at least USD 29 a month: the free plan links no products, so it cannot run an order flow.

Will installing Zendrop replace or change my Shopify theme?

It can. A review dated 8 August 2026 on the App Store listing reports the app publishing its demo theme over a live store. Theme access is part of what the install permission grants. Use a development store to test first, and never install on a live store you cannot afford to take offline for cleanup.

How do I completely uninstall Zendrop and undo any theme changes?

Clicking "Remove app" in your Shopify admin removes the app but does not guarantee that theme edits are reversed. Check your theme sections for residual app blocks, review product templates for orphaned sections, and contact Zendrop's chat to ask about data retention. The listing does not document what data Zendrop keeps after uninstall or how to request deletion.

Is Zendrop worth it for a store that already has products from another supplier?

Almost never. If you already source products and handle fulfilment, Zendrop duplicates that relationship and adds a subscription plus an unknown per-order markup. The case where it helps is switching sourcing entirely and needing a new pipeline fast. Even then, verify per-order costs before installing.
